Located at Darraweit Guim, Northern Flying Group is the caretaker club for the VMAA State Field. NFG is a club with a proud history, and holds the firm belief that we are here to have fun, and help other members to achieve excellence in flying.

With fantastic club rooms fitted with all amenities, and a solid member base with top instructors, all help to make Northern Flying Group the great club it is.

The Northern Flying group started in 1978 after a group of modellers decided to form a club, when, use of land was offered at Roxborough Park in Somerton by the Moonee Valley Racing Committee. The land was used by the club for 5 years, after which the Racing Committee put the property up for sale. Whilst ocuppying the site the NFG club improved the area with working bees, and hard work. The membership grew from 10 to over 40 members.

In 1983, after a thorough search of the local area, the club moved to another location, a property nearby in Cooper St, Epping. This site was leased for a 4 year term. During this time , Easter 1985, Northern Flying Group organised the largest Model Aircraft Pageant in the Southern Hemisphere. This Pageant, though not a financialy successful, is still remembered as a magnificent event and gave a boost to aeromodelling. At the time it was the most advanced adventure ever undertaken by a modelling club or organisation. Many hours of labour and a lot of money was spent to prepare the site for the occasion. All of which was performed and paid for by the NFG alone. Over the following 4 years membership grew to over 100.

Early in 1987 the Cooper st property was offered to Pioneer Quarries and the lease expired. The NFG became incorperated in 1989. (Now NFGinc.)

From May 1987 until August 1991, several short term flying fields were used in Epping, Merna, and Whittlesea. Our membership fell to a 30 and a field committee was set up to look for a new site. A site in Harvest Home Lane, Epping was found in late 1991 and a Town and Planning permit to opperate was obtained from the council in January 1992. A Lease was established, reviewed every 6 months. Membership grew to 70  over the period but by 1995 we were  looking for another site.

The club moved to the present location 214 Quales Rd in 1995. With the help of some loans (which were repaid ) from the MAAA for fencing and some early ground works, the dedicated Members started, yet again, to rebuild the facilities of the flying club. This was the 8th relocation since 1978, and yet there was a new enthusiasm, driven no doubt, by the prostpect of having a long term tenure on a permanent site.

Over the next 20 years the clubhouse, grounds, irrigation system, runways were improved and to this day work has never stopped. On 1st Dec 2014  the property was burnt during the Mickleham bushfire and luckily the clubhouse was spared. Neighbours were not so lucky and many houses and 3 lives were lost. It took a year or more to repair the physical and mental scars of the fire and its aftermath.  In recent years the membership has stablised at about 55.

The excellent flying site, and facilities we call home, is testiment to the dedication of the founding fathers and current members of The Northern Flying group inc.
